Women Beyond the Wire: A Story of Prisoners of the Japanese 1942-45 (1982, 1997) By Lavinia Warner & John Sandilands

 

an account of the experiences of the women internees of the Japanese in Sumatra, most of whom were refugees from the last-minute evacuation of Singapore and fewer than half of whom survived in the jungle camps to the end of WW2.

 

Warner contacted more than 50 survivors of the Malaya and Sumatra POW camps and here tells of the experiences of the British women who went from a life of privilege to a life of incarceration. Especially conveys the sense of sisterhood that developed amongst many of the women, which helped them to endure captivity and to survive.
