Wings Of Romance (1951) By Captain W.E. Johns

Wings of Romance was first published by George Newnes in 1939 and was the 5th and last book length novel in the Steeley series. Prior to publication in book form, the story had been serialised in 6 parts in The Thriller magazine between 25th September 1937 to 30th October 1937. It had also been serialised in 7 parts in Flying magazine between 4th June 1938 and 16th July 1938.

The story features the adventure "Steeley" Delaroy and his friends Tubby Wilde and Brian Ballantyne and is set mainly in the the Central American country of Carabonia. Like the other "Steeley" stories, this is told in the first person, with Tubby as the narrator. While it had its limitations in plotting, it also gave Johns the opportunity for extensive descriptive prose pictures of people and places.

In 1979, French publisher Aredit published a two-part comic strip adaptation of the story entitled Les aventuriers de l'air and Worrals en Carabonie in their small format comic series for girls Tina, Issues 94 and 95. This featured Worrals, Frecks, Tubby and Brian in the lead roles with the action and dialogue of the original three characters now distributed over the four of them.
