Ian Stewart once Medical Officer to the 1st Welch, revisited the scenes of battle in Crete after World War II. He began a detailed study of the relevant documents, using many fresh sources to examine the battle more comprehensively than any previous writer. He reconstructs the succession of problems that faced the leaders on each side, assessing their characters in the light of their actions, and in the end, comes to the conclusion that great opportunities were lost to the Allies to retain Crete against Hitler.
