On February 16, 1940, the British destroyer Cossack entered Norwegian territorial waters. It's target the Altmark, a German supply ship returning to Germany with 299 British merchant sailors on board, picked up from ships sunk by the heavy cruiser Graf Spee. The Altmark was forced to release her prisoners and Hitler now knew that Norway and Denmark's neutral status couldn't be counted on. Soon both countries were under Nazi control and the resistance began.
