The End Of Glory: An Interpretation of the Origins of World War II  (1970) By Laurence Lafore

Lafore's central thesis is that World War II was a sort of foreordained exercise in closing out Europe's global dominance. In the vacuum created during the 1920s and 30s by the isolationism of the United States and the Soviet Union's preoccupation with its internal struggles, the traditional European powers enacted a final iteration of their centuries-old diplomatic and military rivalries, but it was only that - acting. The ground had shifted after the catastrophe of the Great War, and power had moved out to Europe's Atlantic and Asiatic flanks, but the nascent superpowers had yet to assume their responsibilities for world order. The result was the tragic-farcical destruction of Europe, led by that most absurd of characters, Adolf Hitler.
