The Department's main function is to support Australia's Navy, Army and Air Force in defence production, research and development, purchasing, transport and storage. The Department is
also the Commonwealth Disposals Authority. Finally, the Department is responsible for the Australian Antarctic programme.
Production of aircraft, guided missiles, small arms, ammunition, explosives, marine engines, clothing, etc. is carried out in the Department's factories and in industry.
