 The history of HMAS Perth during World War 2.

 

HMAS Perth was built at Portsmouth Naval Dockyard and commissioned into the Royal Navy as HMS Amphion on 15 June 1936. Purchased by the Australian Government, she was commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy on 29 June 1939.

 

On 28 February 1982 the Australian light cruiser HMAS Perth, and the American heavy cruiser, Houston. encountered a strong Japanese convoy moving in to invade Java and, after a fierce engagement with an overwhelming force of [Japanese] cruisers and destroyers, were both sunk.

 

The ship was torpedoed by the Japanese and sank on 1 March 1942. Of the Perth’s company of 686, only 218 were repatriated. Many became prisoners of war and were incarcerated in camp near Batavia, Java.

 

The author served as a gunner on HMAS Perth during World War 2.
