By Antietam Creek: A Novel Of The Civil War (1960) By Don Robertson
This book, the second novel written by the vastly underrated Don Robertson, is a sequel of sorts to his earlier The Three Days. As a Civil War story, it is more concerned with characterization and getting inside the minds of the bewildered and frightened young soldiers than in presenting a linear action structure. But this is not to say that Robertson loses focus on the battle at hand. This novel has plenty of action and is quite graphic and realistic in it's descriptions of the battlefield, which are on par with the film Saving Private Ryan in their visceral impact.
