The Greek phalanx was a rectangular mass military formation, usually composed entirely of heavy infantry armed with spears, pikes, sarissas, or similar pole weapons tightly packed together.
 
Romans only attacked it if they saw they could exploit a badly composed one.
 
The Romans, when attacking, took the concept further and adapted the Greek Phalanx into their own version, a Roman Phalanx with vision slots in shields to view the front, covered front and top with their shields, and with Roman spear throwers assigned to keep archers with heads down.   It was a very formidable attacking formation which rely on all of the men to keep it tight.
