Battle For Britain: The Recollections of Wing Commander H.R. 'Dizzy' Allen DFC (1975) By H.R. 'Dizzy' Allen

The memoirs of an RAF fighter pilot during WWII. He was given command of his original squadron at the age of twenty-one - he was the sole survivor of the original team of his squadron, as his friends and colleagues had been tragically killed in action or posted elsewhere. He recalls vividly what life was like in a fighter squadron; the constant proximity of death and the necessity, particularly for the commander, to conceal the grief for friends who would never return; the unique affinity between members of the close-knit unit; the blessed relief on the return to base. During the war and the years that followed Allen probably commanded more fighter squadrons than any other officer in the history of the RAF. After twenty-one years of service, he asked to be retired prematurely realising he would not be offered another full-time flying appointment. As a postscript, he went on to become a professional air passenger - in the role of Queen's Messenger, picking up nearly a million miles and visiting every quarter of the globe.
